Whether you gave birth fairly recently or your children are older, you may be unhappy with the body that you see in the mirror. Pregnancy and nursing can bring many changes to the body. The skin is stretched far beyond its normal limits, the muscles can become stretched or torn, new long term fat deposits can appear, and the breasts can lose their fullness and begin to sag. All of these changes are common and expected after childbirth, but that doesn’t mean that you have to live in a body that you’re unhappy with. If you’re struggling with any or all of these issues, a mommy makeover may be the ideal surgery for you.
What Areas of Your Body Are You Unhappy With?
A mommy makeover is designed to resolve multiple problems at one time. There are 3 components to the mommy makeover procedure in most cases. These include:
- LIposuction: Liposuction targets the fat deposits that just won’t go away, even after you’ve lost weight and exercised faithfully. Liposuction is usually done in the belly, hips, and sometimes in the chest area during a mommy makeover, depending on your individual needs.
- Tummy Tuck: A tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, is designed to remove extra skin and fat. After you’ve gone through pregnancy, it’s often not possible for the skin to return to its original shape due to overstretching and lost elasticity. A tummy tuck takes the extra skin away and tightens up the muscles that may have been stretched out during pregnancy and labor.
- Breast Augmentation and/or Breast Lift: Many women have reduced volume in their breasts after pregnancy and nursing. it’s also common for breasts to sag after having children. A mommy makeover can include breast augmentation with either saline or silicone implants for volume and breast lift to reposition the breasts on the chest.
A mommy makeover surgery allows you to improve all areas of the body that were negatively affected by pregnancy at one time. Instead of having to go through multiple surgeries and anesthesia sessions, you’ll just need to have one anesthesia and one surgery with a mommy makeover. Essentially, the mommy makeover surgery is designed to create a whole new you.
Are You Finished Building Your Family?
Mommy makeovers are best suited for women who are finished with family building, or who don’t plan to have any more children. While the mommy makeover can yield excellent results, much of those good results could potentially be undone with further pregnancies. The best time to schedule a mommy makeover is individual to each woman, so Dr. Rau recommends that you schedule a consultation to discuss what timing would be best for you. The body does need to be completely recovered from your last pregnancy before a mommy makeover should be scheduled. If you’re currently breastfeeding, it’s recommended that you wait until the baby is fully weaned. The breast tissue can take several months to return to normal after breastfeeding, and for the best results from mommy makeover surgery, your breasts should be at or close to their pre-pregnancy size.
Ready to Take the Next Step Towards a Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover surgery is more than just a plastic surgery procedure: It’s a way to help you feel better about yourself. Many women say that a mommy makeover helps them feel more comfortable in their own skin, or that mommy makeover surgery allows them to recapture the self-confidence that they had before pregnancy. If you’re unhappy with the changes in your body following pregnancy and breastfeeding, this may just be the ideal solution for you.
